A few weeks ago I was kindly sent the Givenchy Noir Interdit mascara to try and review. I really wanted to give myself enough time to try it out before I posted anything about it. I find sometimes my opinion of mascara can change a little bit within the first 3 or 4 times I try it out.
I normally only use drugstore mascaras or sample sizes of high end mascaras so I was pretty excited to try out this out. In general, I rarely use luxury makeup brands so this was a bit of a new experience for me. I think the outer packaging is incredible and definitely looks luxury.
First of all I’m not at all a fan of the way that this mascara smells. It has a really strong floral scent to it. The kind of scent that my grandmother would wear. Which I find seriously weird for a mascara. I really don’t feel super comfortable sticking that anywhere near my eyes. The scent also lingers quite a bit. I was in my car quite a few hours after applying the mascara and I could still smell it on me. So if you’re super sensitive to scents or spend a lot of time in small rooms I’m not sure if you’ll be a fan of this.
Now the main feature of the mascara is the fact that the wand bends 90 degrees. I think this is such a unique feature that I haven’t seen before. I’m not completely certain that this is necessary. It did take a little while to get used to though. The first few times that I used this I got mascara all over my eyelid. But after a few times of playing around with it I completely got the hang of it.
The brush on this mascara was perfect in my opinion. The first time I looked at it I was a little worried because it looked like the type of wand that could really scratch up my eye. Plus I was a little confused with the fact that it only had bristles on one side of the wand. But after using it I wish it was the brush for every mascara. It really combed through my lashes so well. I find sometimes my lashes get coated with a lot of mascara but the brush manages to clump them all together, which results in my lashes looking sparse and dismal. This really helps to spread out each lash perfectly.
The formula of the product was nice but I don’t think it’s my favourite. It really gave my lashes a great amount of length but I was really lacking on the volume. I think lately I’ve realized that I’m a huge fan of volume mascaras. I already have a good amount of length when it comes to my lashes so I really just want my lashes to look super full. It was a really nice natural everyday kind of mascara. Some days I’m not looking for the most when it comes to my makeup look so I think this would be great for those days.
Now let’s talk about the price. This mascara comes with a $38 price tag. I honestly think that’s pretty hefty for a product that you should be switching out every 2-3 months. I think if you only have one mascara on the go at every moment this could be a nice mascara to treat yourself with. At the same time a lot of the mascara that you can purchase at Sephora are around 25 to 40 dollars. So I don’t really think it’s that crazy if you already purchase mascara from brands like Too Faced or Lancome. This is a high end luxury brand but I don’t really think the price of it is super crazy compared to everything else sold at Sephora. I’m just a huge fan of drugstore mascara that it always shocks me when I look at how much companies charge for a product that expires so quickly.
Overall I’m not sure if I would purchase this specific mascara in the future. But I think I would want to try out a few of the other ones from Givenchy. They have a lot of other mascaras that have unique features like this one. So I think it would be fun to give them a shot a see if they might have a more volumizing formula.
Have you tried out this mascara before? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
