What’s In My Makeup Bag: Commuter Edition

What’s In My Makeup Bag: Commuter Edition

For the past 11 months I’ve been spending a few days a week travelling into Toronto for either school or my internship. I don’t own my own car or even want to attempt to battle traffic every day, so I spend a lot of time in the morning on the GO Train.

I’m not a huge morning person so I will spend every moment that I can laying in bed. I still want to look somewhat presentable and put my best face forward, so I manage to put makeup most mornings. I’ve become one of the people who has perfected getting my makeup on while I’m on the go train, even though everyone on the GO Train tends to look at me like I’m a crazy person.

I want to share some of the products that I use on my commute and some tips that have been working well for me.

This bag has been one of the best discoveries that I’ve found recently. I purchased this on Aliexpress for about 7 dollars. It’s the perfect size so it fits all of my products without taking up too much space in my backpack or purse. It has a couple great mesh pockets to store some of my smaller products. There is also a really great divider that helps keeps all of my makeup products together and holds all of the makeup brushes that I think I might need.

These are probably my holy grail products.

I never leave the house without some sort of brow product on, mainly because I find my natural brow colour to be way too light compared to my actual hair. I always make sure to pack a brow pencil, pomade and gel – even if I don’t end up using all three of those products every day. The Colourpop brow products have easily become my favourite brow products lately. I find that they wear really well throughout the day and the tone and shade matches my hair really well.

I think it’s really important to grab a compact product with a decent sized mirror. It makes it a lot easier to apply makeup while travelling if you can see more of your face.

I rarely have a makeup look that doesn’t include some type of translucent powder or bronzer, so I always have to make sure I pack that with me. The Rimmel Stay Matte Powder and Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer are both great picks in my opinion.

I am obsessed with making myself looking like a disco ball so I never forget to dust a whole lot of highlight on every day. Recently I’ve been a huge fan of the Becca Cosmetics highlighters.

I have very light eyelashes so it’s important for me to have a lengthening and volumizing mascara. I find that I can never find one that does both jobs really well so I’m usually stuck working with two separate products.

It’s a lot easier to line your lips while travelling if you have a self sharpening lip liner. The annabelle lipliners are the most affordable option that I have found with that feature, so I recommend checking these out if you’ve never tried them before.

I don’t always pack a blush product but recently I’ve been trying to get through the Nars madly blush so I carry that around with me everywhere.

On nights that I know I’ll be staying in Toronto I always pack a foundation and primer. Recently I’ve been going with the Make Up Forever Smoothing Primer along with the Covergirl Stay Luminous Foundation.

I always have some type of lip balm packed since I have chronic dry and flakey lips.

I’m really confused about why I’ve been carrying around a sharpener when I don’t have any products packed that can even use it. Looks like that will be something I have to clear out!

My lip products change just about every time I pack my makeup bag. But I usually have a few nude lip colours with either brown or pink tones and a darker more vampy type lip colour. I never really know what kind of vibe I’m going for that day until I’m actually on the train and applying makeup.

For those really early mornings it’s essential to have a heavy duty concealer to cover up those crazy under eyes. The IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer always does the trick for me.

For the summer months it’s essential for me to use as many products as I can to look like I have a healthy glow so I love packing the Maybelline Master Prime Blur + Illuminate Primer. This is a great product to layer under or over your foundation for a healthy looking glow.

My eyelashes tend to fall flat so an eyelash curler is a must pack product.

Do you have any tips or tricks for trying to put makeup on the go? I would love to hear about them in the comments below!

    Hi Stephanie,

Good for you to be able to do flawless makeup while you are on the go train. Your makeup always looks great! I really need to learn how to do that because I also love to stay in my bed as long as I can. I enjoyed this blog post because it made the process of doing your makeup easy and affordable. I tend to get comfortable with certain products so I love hearing about and discovering new ways I can enhance my look.

Also, I loved how you neatly displayed the products you used in clear pictures which makes it easier for me to remember them the next time I’m shopping for makeup. You write in a very relatable way and I can truly feel your passion for makeup throughout your post. Thanks for the tips and if I remember any tips I will be sure to let you know 🙂

  • Hi Nicole,

Thanks so much! I also get really comfortable with products that I enjoy. It’s always good to force yourself to try something new with makeup if you get the chance. I’m glad that my tips and photos will help you out!

  • Kudos to you for being able to do your make-up on the train – I don’t think I’d be able to get past the people who stare! This was a great post. The flat lay style of your photos mad it easy to see which products you were referring to. I would’ve liked if you had included some swatches, maybe of the lip products and highlighter, just to get a better glimpse of what it looks like!

    • Thanks so much! It definitely takes a while to get used to all the people staring. I will keep that in mind and include more swatches in the future!

  • Hi Stephanie,
Awesome post! I like your style of writing, it is very down to earth and easy to follow. Before I got my car I used to take the GO bus downtown to school and found myself doing my makeup on the go just like you. The benefit of the bus is that there is no one facing you to give you weird looks, only someone beside you to do the same thing (lol). Your post was broken up very well into different categories. I would have maybe included some links to some of the products you mentioned so that it is easier for me to search for them online (and then buy them). You include a link to your Instagram at the end which does feature individual products but including one or two links in the text would be great too. One of the things I love the most about your post is the amount of products you feature, and the fact that lots of them are drugstore or online brands that are very affordable. Makeup can be so expensive, so when I try out new styles or ideas I like to go online or visit Shoppers so I don’t break my bank account. Thanks for sharing!

  • Hi Stephanie!

Love the post! Make-up is something I’ve always been interested in but never been good at, I would love to learn more and your page is the perfect place for that, I will continue to follow your posts and maybe next time I try to do my makeup I wont feel so lost!
