I was so so excited when I saw the announcement that Colourpop was going to be releasing mascara. They have such amazing products at such an affordable price that I knew this was going to be a good product. Everyone has been asking Colourpop to release mascara for ages so I knew they wouldn’t release a product that wasn’t great quality. I received the shade Black On Black and it was one of the products that was included in the Colourpop Mystery Bag that I bought at the end of January!

I have fairly long lashes but they are really blonde at the ends. I’m always looking for a mascara that will darken my lashes, make them just slightly longer and super volumizing.
The Colourpop packaging for the mascara is adorable. I love the designs on the tube and how high quality the packaging feels. The wand is very similar to the too faced better than sex mascara wand. It has an hourglass shape to it. It’s a little less hourglass shaped than the better than sex mascara though which I actually like. It makes the whole wand more useful in my opinion.
I found the formula to be a little on the dry side. This isn’t a problem for me because I love dry mascara. Like when you’ve been using the mascara for a few weeks and the mascara isn’t as wet as it was in the beginning is my favourite. I have lashes that struggle to keep a curl and I find the dryer formulas do a great job at keeping the curl for a longer amount of time. I am a little worried that this mascara might dry out a little quicker than normal because of how dry the formula is to begin with. But I’m sure it will last the 2-3 months I usually keep my mascaras for. It’s also super affordable so it’s not too bad for the bank account to have to replace it more often.
I was able to build up the volume I liked with 2-3 coats of mascara. It could be a little clumpy after applying the second coat. But as long as I took my time applying the mascara and really trying to build it up I didn’t have too much of a problem.
One thing I noticed is that this mascara does not hold up well if you eyes are watery. One of my eyes gets extremely watery in the winter time – to the point where it looks like I’m crying out of just one eye when I’m outside in the cold. When this happened and I was wearing this mascara it ended up smudging and getting all over my under eye area. It wasn’t ideal at all and I definitely think that might be a deal breaker for me because I can’t really wear this as often as I would like during the wintertime.
Trying to remove the mascara is extremely messy. I found that when I used an oil cleanser I ended up with mascara literally all over my face. It was definitely something that I always needed to double cleanse with. I don’t find that a huge problem but I do like when mascaras are easy to remove. This doesn’t get stuck on my lashes though which is a bonus. I’m not scrubbing at my lashes and tugging at my lid or anything because it just ends up everywhere as soon as I start to rub in the oil cleanser.
I really love how my lashes look when I’m wearing this mascara. I think I can build it up perfectly and get the exact look that I want. Since it’s a drier formula I am able to keep the curl on my lashes for most of the day. But it does get all over my face if I touch my eyes or when my eyes start to water and it’s quite the process to remove. Overall I do like the mascara but I don’t know if I would repurchase this in the future. I’ve tried a lot of products that are similar in price and work better for my needs. I’m a little disappointed and I was expecting a lot more out of Colourpop. I’m hoping they release a different formula of mascara in the future and it works better for me!
